
Happy Monday, downtown Phoenix! It’s Michelle, everyone’s favorite guide to events happening in the area. I come bearing gifts: a week’s worth of fun events. Whether you strap on a pair of roller skates or get up on the mic, this week is sure to excite.
Sure Shots
When: Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
Where: Alwun House at 1204 E. Roosevelt St.
Cost: $10
Ever wanted to learn how to play roller derby? Arizona Roller Derby, a Phoenix-based league, is hosting short track practices every Monday at Alwun House ahead of its Dec. 4 tournament. It costs $10 to drop in.
Step Up and Speak Poetic Justice: Open Mic Featuring Qui Qarre
When: Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Where: Changing Hands Bookstore at 300 W. Camelback Road
Cost: Free
The Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing and Local to Global Justice bring Kenyan poet Qui Qarre to perform spoken word poetry, followed by an open mic hosted by Joy Young and Elizabeth Swadener.
Sunset Yin Yoga
When: Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
Where: Kenect Phoenix at 355 N. Central Ave.
Cost: Free
Head up to the 8th-floor backyard for a sunset yoga session led by Amy Charles. Get there early (the session is limited to 15 people), and bring your own mat.
Ghost Poetry Show
When: Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: FilmBar at 815 N. 2nd St.
Cost: $7-$10
Tickets are $7 before the day of the show, and $10 the day of the show. Doors open at 6:30, the poetry slams runs from 7 – 9 p.m.
Native American Heritage Night at the Phoenix Suns
When: Friday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m.
Where: Footprint Center at 201 E. Jefferson St.
Cost: $29+, varies
The Phoenix Suns will be facing off against the Dallas Mavericks. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a t-shirt designed by Breeze.
Buy tickets to the game ahead of time.
The School of Ballet Arizona Fall Showcase
When: Nov. 18-20, various showtimes
Where: Dorrance Theatre at 2835 E. Washington St.
Cost: $30
Ballet Arizona’s young dancers and Studio Company will take the stage with classical ballet, jazz and flamenco, supported by the musical stylings of Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras.
Buy tickets ahead of time.
Festival of the Arts
When: Saturday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Where: Herberger Theatre at 222 E. Monroe St.
Cost: Free, but event parking in the Arizona Center garage will be available for $6 at the Herberger Theatre box office
The 12th annual Festival of the Arts features a jam-packed schedule of performances, vendors, food and hands-on activities.
