Hello my lovely downtown Phoenix people! It’s your downtown guide, T.J. Triolo. We’re now nearing the end of December, which marks the real beginning of winter. Between holidays and the beginning of winter recently, that calls for a celebration, such as one in the form of taking part in local events!
The Salvation Army Christmas Dinner
Tuesday Dec. 25
9 a.m.–1 p.m. (Meals served from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.)
Phoenix Convention Center
33 S. Third St.
Every year, The Salvation Army puts on a Christmas dinner event for people in Phoenix. They offer entertainment, free long-distance phone calls, haircuts and more, in addition to a meal. This helpful event with holiday spirit is free.
Arizona Science Center Snow Week
Wednesday Dec. 26–Tuesday Jan. 1
10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Arizona Science Center
600 E. Washington St.
The Arizona Science Center will be hosting its snow week, which involves more than 100 tons of snow being dumped on the grounds near the Science Center to play in. Ah, Phoenix… one of the few places in the U.S. where snow has to be a man-made rarity. Here’s your chance to play in it without going all the way to Flagstaff! In addition to the snow, there will be special events held at the Science Center throughout the week. Admission is free with general museum entry.
Railversary
Thursday Dec. 27
5–10 p.m.
Talking Stick Resort Arena
201 E. Jefferson St.
The Valley Metro Light Rail system is turning 10 years old, and Valley Metro is hosting a celebration to mark the occasion. This event includes information on the impact the light rail has had on Phoenix, music and entertainment, giveaways and more. Admission is free.
Year in Review Trivia 2018
Friday Dec. 28
5:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m.
Valley Bar
130 N. Central Ave.
Team up with some friends for a trivia competition related to happenings this year. If you keep up regularly on the news, I’d say you’ll probably do well. If you didn’t keep up with the news, good luck; you may fail spectacularly, or you just might guess the right answers and win the whole thing!
Admission is $35 per person.
Blockbuster Scores: Music From TV and Film
Friday Dec. 28–Sunday Dec. 30
Starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. on Sunday
Symphony Hall
75 N. 2nd St.
The Phoenix Symphony is putting on a concert featuring music from popular movies and TV shows, including “The Simpsons,” “Jurassic Park” and “Back to the Future.” Maybe I’m uncultured for saying this, but my favorite orchestra and symphony music is the scores of movies and TV shows. I think this should be a fun concert!
Tickets cost $30–$108.
