Downtown Digest: Storyslams and Santa

What’s up my downtown people!? It’s your guide to what’s happening this week, T.J. Triolo.

Thanksgiving is over and December is coming, so I hope you got to gobble up plenty of turkey and other delicious things. Now it’s the holiday season, so whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or any other holiday this time of year, may you have a happy one! And do be sure to take advantage of special holiday-themed events going on.

The Moth Presents: Storyslam
Wednesday Nov. 28
Starts at 7 p.m.
Crescent Ballroom
308 N. 2nd Ave.

If you’re looking for open mic nights with a more competitive element, look no further. Storyslam events are once-a-month competitions for storytelling, based on the theme of each month’s night. This month, the theme is “beginnings.” That seems appropriate, given that we’re getting close to the start of a new year! Use five minutes and tell the best story you can, maybe one that will make you a legend! Tickets cost $10.

Holiday or Any Day Star Cards
Thursday Nov. 29
6–8 p.m.
Heritage Square
113 N. 6th St.

If you don’t have any holiday greeting cards, then you should make some at this event! Make them personalized and give your heart to your loved ones this holiday season. I think I just achieved my goal of sounding like a Hallmark commercial! Come make some cards with star designs on them and make your loved one a star. Tickets cost $20–$22.

Hope Filled Holiday: Feed My Starving Children
Friday Nov. 30
9 a.m.–9 p.m.
Phoenix Convention Center
100 N. 3rd St.

Do you want to help reduce hunger around the world? Then do some good and help pack boxes of food for people in poverty. I’ve actually volunteered with Feed My Starving Children before, and it’s fun! It’s free, easy and fun for the whole family.

Breakfast with Santa
Saturday Dec. 1
8–10 a.m.
Phoenix Children’s Museum
215 N. 7th St.

Santa’s taking time out of his busy schedule to attend this fun breakfast. Here kids can take pictures with Santa and meet him, as well as chowing down on delicious breakfast. Afterward, kids can spend the day in the Children’s Museum. Tickets cost $29.95 per member attendee and $39.95 for each non-member attendee.

Kung Food Fest
Saturday Dec. 1
12–6 p.m.
Heritage Square
113 N. 6th St.

Yes, it’s another downtown food festival. But this time it’s for Asian food, which is great! I love Asian food (and most kinds of food), so having a festival for it will be tasty indeed. From ramen to curry, at least a dozen local restaurants will be serving up their specialties. This sounds like a must try! Tickets cost $10 per person.
