Hello downtown readers! It’s your guide to events downtown, T.J. Triolo. I’ve got some events coming up this week for you that will entertain, amaze and surprise you. Well, they may not do that much, but at least they’ll provide some entertainment for you.
Paz Cantina Grand Reopening
Monday Sept. 17
Starts at 11 a.m.
Paz Cantina
330 E. Roosevelt St.
The Paz Cantina is back! The Mexican restaurant, which closed in 2015, is getting a new location after life as a food truck. It’s actually reopening in its old location, albeit in a new building. The old one has been replaced by an apartment complex, but the Paz will have its new home on the first floor. This means that Roosevelt Row residents can rejoice, because now there will be another option for tacos, because tacos are amazing.
Hispanic Heritage Celebration
Monday Sept. 17–Friday Sept. 21
11 a.m.–1 p.m.
Wells Fargo History Museum
145 W. Adams St.
The Wells Fargo History Museum is holding a weeklong celebration of Hispanic heritage, with a tour of Hispanic culture in mind. Each day a different country will get the spotlight, with activities and refreshments provided as well. And this is all for free, so why wouldn’t you go?
Park(ing) Day 2018
Friday Sept. 21
7–10 a.m.
Washington Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue
This event looks really cool. It’s time to turn parking spaces into parks and other spots for people to congregate for a few hours! I like miniature things (or at least have a fascination with them), and I’d love to see parking spaces become fun little interactive spaces for a few hours. Make things fun for a few hours, and go see some cool parking space adaptations for free!
The Identity of She Presents: Rep Ya City Magazine Launch Party
Saturday Sept. 22
5–8 p.m.
Public Image
333 E. Roosevelt St.
Clothing company The Identity of She is launching their fall collection at this party. This event features local designers and models, making it the perfect opportunity to come support local fashion! Seeing how I don’t wear women’s clothing, I don’t think I’d understand much about this event. I will say that I think women’s clothing often looks better than men’s clothing, but it’s not really my style. My point is this: At least go appreciate the nice fashion, even if it’s not your style! This event is free.
2018 Phoenix Children’s Festival
Saturday Sept. 22
11 a.m.–4 p.m.
CityScape
1 E. Washington St.
This is the second year of the Phoenix Children’s Festival, a festival featuring vendors, rides, games and more fun for families. I probably would have loved this when I was younger, about 8 or 10 years ago. After all, I used to love kid-focused events, probably because I was a kid at the time. The event also includes a clothing donation drive for Back to School Clothing Drive, a local Arizona charity that helps provide children in need with clothing and backpacks. If you have children, go have some weekend fun with them at this event with free admission; however, rides and games do vary in cost.
Correction: This story previously noted the wrong location for Park(ing) Day. It has been updated to reflect the correct location as Washington Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues.
