Downtown Digest: Virtual tours galore with race cars, pyramids and more

The Japanese Friendship Garden. (Hope O'Brien/DD)

Hello downtown Phoenix! It’s your guide to staying inside, T.J. Triolo. I’ve got some more stuff for you to do online listed here, so if you need more stuff to do at home I’ve got you covered.

Personally, I’ve been trying to catch up on my backlog of PlayStation 4 games that have been sitting around for a while. I’m in the process of playing through Uncharted 4 now, and I don’t know why I didn’t finish it months ago.

Anyway, here’s your weekly list of activities.

Legends of Speed Virtual Tour
The Phoenix Art Museum has a lot of classic race cars there right now, but obviously visitors can’t go see them in person. For your entertainment, the museum has decided to remedy this problem as much as possible with a free virtual tour of the exhibit on YouTube. Now, if only I could take it even farther than seeing the cars in person and drive them … What can I say, I’m having to tell myself not to buy 1960s cars I’m finding on OfferUp and Craigslist again. I have a problem.

Herberger Theater Center Art Gallery 360 Tour
The Herberger Theater Center has an art gallery, which I’m not sure I’ve ever been to. If you are like me and didn’t know the Herberger had an art gallery, here’s your chance to see it virtually! They have a free 360-degree tour online to check out their exhibited items. This got me thinking that having a drone with a camera would be very fun to play with in empty places. Hmm, maybe I should get one.

Japanese Friendship Garden Livestream
The Japanese Friendship Garden has a livestream every weekday starting at 10 a.m. If you miss going to the garden in person, then see it from your living room. I know I miss going. I had been meaning to go again for a while now, and then I missed my chance. Oops. At least this way you can watch for free in your pajamas!

Arizona History Digital Hub
If you’ve taken world history or American history courses in school, they probably didn’t focus much on Arizona unless you grew up here. I know I learned a lot about Arizona’s history, but that is because I moved here when I was 7 years old and I have been living here ever since. Brush up on your Arizona history facts with the Arizona History Digital Hub, which has online resources for you to learn more about the history of our state. If you’ve never even heard of Arizona’s “Five C’s,” check out this site to stop being an Arizona history noob!

Google Great Pyramids Tour
With more free time at home on your hands, you can also virtually visit famous cultural sites from around the world. Google has virtual tours of multiple sites, including the Great Pyramids. Thanks to my family and friends loving “Despicable Me,” I will now always think of the beginning of that movie when I think of the pyramids. This makes me feel very uncultured, so this online tour would be perfect to restore my cultural awareness.
