Hello my lovely downtown Phoenix people! I hope you’re enjoying your extended weekend thanks to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This means you probably have more time to do things, which I am more than happy to provide you with!
MLK Celebration
Monday Jan. 21
10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Margaret T. Hance Park
1202 N. Third St.
This festival honors civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy. Vendors, entertainment, food, and a health fair will all be offered during this interaction of diverse cultures. This event is free.
RoRo Comedy Show
Tuesday Jan. 22
7:30 p.m.–9 p.m.
Rott n’ Grapes
1001 N. Third Ave. #1
Okay, props to whoever came up with the event description on Rott n’ Grapes’ website. The first sentence is “Comedy right off the vine, so you can unwine.” Someone beat me to making a pun about wine at a wine bar’s comedy show! Happy hour lasts until 8 p.m., so get there when the show begins for the specials. This event is free, excluding food and drinks.
Royal Rumble Axxess
Friday Jan. 25 to Sunday Jan. 27
6–10 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m.–12 p.m. Sunday
Phoenix Convention Center
33 S. Third St.
World Wrestling Entertainment is bringing a huge event to Phoenix for its fans. It involves a lot, including the chance to meet the wrestler stars, see live wrestling matches and rare memorabilia. So basically, it’s like a traveling museum of WWE. I don’t know of a whole lot of traveling museums myself, but this seems like a cool opportunity. Tickets cost $45–$150.
Connect2STEM
Saturday Jan. 26
10 a.m.–3 p.m.
University of Arizona College of Medicine
435 N. Fifth St.
The University of Arizona and Cox Communications are teaming up to bring the public an event focused on STEM. You know, like the stems of plants. I’m kidding; it’s actually about science, technology, engineering and math. This is a family-friendly event oriented toward kids that tries to encourage them to pursue a future STEM career through more than 150 different activities. This event is free.
The Grand Wine Festival
Saturday Jan. 26 and Sunday Jan. 27
11 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Sunday
Heritage Square
113 N. Sixth St.
If you’re a big fan of wine, I’ve found the festival you’ve been waiting for. You can thank me after your wine tastings. This festival features more than 200 different wines from more than 30 different wineries. The wineries are also all from Arizona! Honestly, I did not know Arizona had this many wineries. Tickets cost $15–$45.
