The Downtown Devil is excited to announce a change in its leadership structure, one that will more closely mirror that of major professional news organizations while maintaining its unique collaborative nature.
In early 2009, five freshmen at ASU’s Downtown campus decided the downtown community and burgeoning campus lacked adequate news coverage from established news publications.
What started as a reverse-chronological blog of news stories about downtown issues (which has since been retired) grew into the hyperlocal news publication you’re reading today.
There have been growing pains along the way, but the Downtown Devil has become a staple of many downtown Phoenix residents’ daily news habits.
One constant throughout the Downtown Devil’s existence has been its managerial structure. Five managing editors held equal executive power over the organization.
Five of the early managing editors are featured on our ‘About Us’ page.
In 2012, the Downtown Devil underwent our first wholesale change in leadership, replacing all five founding managing editors; in January, the Downtown Devil ushered in our third group of managing editors.
This semester, the Downtown Devil will move away from the old structure of five managing editors at the top. Instead, our leadership will consist of an executive editor, an editor-in-chief and a managing board.
Mauro Whiteman, the publication’s inaugural executive editor, has previously served as executive managing editor and opinions and special projects editor. The executive editor will oversee all aspects of the organization, with emphasis on the growing community initiatives department and business development.
Connor Radnovich, the publication’s inaugural editor-in-chief, previously served as a night editor and staff reporter. The editor-in-chief will directly oversee all content produced and published by the organization.
To augment the leadership of the executive editor and editor-in-chief, the Downtown Devil’s first managing board will consist of leaders from throughout the organization who represent many viewpoints. The managing board will be consulted on important decisions.
The inaugural managing board will be made up of Annika Cline, the director of audio; Connor Descheemaker, the director of community initiatives; Matt Longdon, the news editor; and Domenico Nicosia, the arts and entertainment editor.
